NE1’s Grey Street Gathering returns to Newcastle city centre next week, on Monday 8 April in time for Easter, the school holidays and hopefully the start of some warm, spring weather. The pocket park is a fabulous addition to Newcastle’s famous Grey Street, paid for thanks to the generosity of NE1’s Geordie Jackpot subscribers.
The Grey Street Gathering will return to take its place on Grey Street in front of the Monument, filling a 38 m x 7 m space. Equipped with bench seating, planters and artificial grass, the park provides an ideal location for busy commuters and visitors to the city to relax and enjoy the beautiful surroundings of Grey Street, often named as one of the most beautiful streets in Europe.
Grey Street Gathering made its first appearance last year, the first city centre project paid for by NE1’s local charity lottery, Geordie Jackpot, which was launched in 2017.
To celebrate the pocket park’s return and all that has been achieved and by way of a thank you to those who continue to support the Geordie Jackpot a private event for Geordie Jackpot subscribers will be held at the Grey Street Gathering on the 24th April. Subscribers will get the chance to be entered into a draw for a chance to win a trip up to the top of Grey’s Monument to see the Grey Street Gathering from a unique and aerial perspective.
The Geordie Jackpot’s latest donation to worthy causes was made recently to Walkergate primary school. The school successfully applied for a Geordie Jackpot grant to buy two Smoothie Bikes, which the school hopes will encourage healthy eating, improve exercise and nutrition among the school’s pupils many of whom are from disadvantaged backgrounds. Representatives from the school together with the Smoothie bikes will be on hand at the subscriber celebration at the end of April.
NE1’s Geordie Jackpot raises money for local worthy causes through 50% of its ticket sales funding initiatives designed to improve the city centre, such as the Grey Street Gathering, and to help Cash for Kids the local charity working with disadvantaged children. The remainder of the cash is used towards cash prizes and helping to fund the lottery.
The people of Newcastle have a long and illustrious history of paying for major civic works, one of the most prominent examples being the Earl Grey
Monument, which towers over the new Grey Street Gathering. The monument was delivered and paid for by subscription by the people of Newcastle in 1832.
The Geordie Jackpot is a weekly local lottery, with even more chances to win cash prizes with an overall prize of £25,000 up for grabs each week.
