Kayaking on the Tyne from NE1’s Newcastle City Marina is a new summertime attraction that is being launched in Newcastle this year for the duration of the school summer holidays. The activity has been added to the river thanks to a collaboration between NE1 Ltd and Cullercoats Bike and Kayak.

Cullercoats Bike and Kayak will take up residence on NE1 Newcastle City Marina for the summer offering locals and tourists the chance to kayak on the Tyne and to see the city from a completely different perspective.

The activity is available for the public to enjoy from 20 July and is expected to appeal to locals and tourists alike.  Booking is required and there is a cost of £45 per adult, £34.50 per child (ages 12+) to take part in the two-hour trip.  Trips will depart Thursday to Sunday throughout the summer starting on Saturday 20 July and running until Sunday 2 September.

Timings for the tours will differ each day due to tidal times but the information, timings and booking details will be publicised on CBK’s website and via NE1’s www.Getintonewcastle.co.uk

Launching from NE1’s Newcastle City Marina in the heart of the Quayside the kayaking experience will take in the 7 bridges spanning the Tyne in a trip lasting approximately an hour.

The team at CBK are experts in kayaking and water sports and have run a successful business at Cullercoats for 5 years.  This year they are teaming up with NE1 Ltd, as part of NE1’s efforts to animate the river and bring more events and activities to the Quayside and the River itself.

Trips will accommodate 12 people with 2 guides accompanying each trip.  The CBK team kayakers and trainers are all well versed in the history of Newcastle, its famous bridges and are knowledgeable about the tides and times of the river.  As well as instructing and guiding the kayaking, the guides will tell the story of the river and the history of the Tyne.

The activity is open to all ages and levels of fitness – the only stipulation is that people should be able to do 30 minutes of moderate exercise.  No previous kayaking experience is required and the trips will be supervised at all times. Children must be accompanied on the water by an adult.

Tariq Albassam, Head of Operations at NE1 Ltd said: “The Tyne is coming back to life with a whole host of recreational activities, we now have Tyne River Cruises and the Kayaking both launching from the City Marina.  NE1’s plan for the next five-year term is to make the most of the river and to help the public enjoy a range of activities on it.  It was clear from talking to businesses during our renewal consultation that there is a great desire for more to be made of the Tyne.  NE1 Newcastle City Marina has given us the opportunity to get more people on the river in the heart of the city centre and the Kayaking will now extend this offer.”

Simon Laing, Founder and CEO of CBKs said:

“CBK is delighted to be bringing the kayaking experience into the heart of the city and we know that there will be a big demand for spaces on the trips.  Kayaking on the Tyne is a great accessible way to get into sport and we can’t wait to share our love of water sports and of the city on these trips.”

NE1 Ltd and CBK hope to organise a number of sunrise and twilight tours to supplement the daily tour programme – details and times will be announced nearer the date of the events.
