This New Year’s Eve promises to be a special one in Newcastle, with the return of two spectacular firework displays on the Quayside.
The free public displays are back by popular demand, the first time since 2019. These have been organised by Newcastle City Council and NE1 as the culmination of the wider programme of successful festive events as part of Newcastle’s Christmas 2024.
These will be the ideal chance for both families and those out celebrating the New Year to welcome in 2025 in style, with two amazing displays guaranteed by the organisers, award winning North East based Reaction Fireworks.
Additional entertainment will be on offer on the Quayside an hour before each display, with eye-catching walkabout performers and local traders supplementing the wide array of nearby businesses, so it’s an ideal opportunity to make a real evening of it and enjoy everything Newcastle has to offer.
A fifteen-minute display will take place at 6pm on the evening providing the perfect place for families to enjoy an early New Year’s Eve celebration, and there will then be a similar length display at midnight for those out enjoying Newcastle’s famous nightlife.
The designated viewing area on the Newcastle Quayside promises the best views of both displays. This runs from under the Tyne Bridge along to the Cycle Hub, and at Baltic Square on Gateshead Quayside. The fireworks will also be visible from wider areas across Newcastle and Gateshead.
Cllr Abdul Samad, Cabinet member for Culture, Music and Arts at Newcastle City Council said: “Newcastle’s Christmas 2024 has been truly exceptional so far, and it gives me great pleasure to announce our plans for New Year’s Eve.
“We are committed to providing excellent, accessible events in Newcastle that can be enjoyed by everyone.
“Local people and visitors to the city have told us their preference is to see in the New Year with fireworks and so having assessed the environmental impact, we have chosen to return this to welcome in 2025.
“We always encourage people to attend organised events such as these, which are safer, more spectacular and take place at specific times so people can plan for them. And as large numbers are expected for both displays, we recommend the use of public transport on the evening.
“In Newcastle we are very lucky to have our magnificent Quayside as the backdrop for these two fabulous displays, offering something for families and revellers alike and the perfect way to welcome in 2025.”
Stephen Patterson, Chief Executive of NE1 said: “We are absolutely delighted that 2024 will see the return of the much-loved fireworks to Newcastle’s iconic and prestigious Quayside, and that the city will welcome in the New Year in style with a fantastic display taking place in one of the most recognisable cityscapes in the UK.
“Newcastle has a well-deserved reputation as a first-class destination to visit and it is essential that the city’s New Year celebrations are of a level appropriate to that reputation. We are sure that anyone travelling to the Quayside for New Year’s Eve will have a fabulous time and we can’t wait to see the displays.”
There will also be road closures in place from 4pm when access to the Quayside and surrounding areas by car will not be possible.
