Struggling for a Christmas present for the Geordie who has it all? Why not give them a pre-Christmas treat, a neon kayaking adventure on the Tyne. Night-time kayaking is being launched in Newcastle this winter offering people a unique adventure and the chance to experience Newcastle’s own NE1 Newcastle City Marina, the Quayside and the Tyne at night in a way that has never before been possible.
NE1 Ltd has teamed up with Cullercoats Bike and Kayaking to launch the new winter glow kayaking tours that will depart at night from NE1’s Newcastle City Marina on Newcastle’s Quayside throughout November, December and into January 2020.
After the phenomenal success of the kayaking on the Tyne Tours that were introduced to Newcastle this summer, Cullercoats Bike and Kayaking is launching the new Winter Glow Tours programme, taking people on the river after dark in specially illuminated kayaks. The new neon kayaking tours will set off from the Marina between 3:30 – 6:30pm in the early evening in a trip that lasts around two hours. Up to 10 people will be able to sign up for each of the trips, which will run into mid-January 2020.
The kayaks will be decked out in waterproof LED lights and customers will be decorated with glow sticks and neon face paint, before heading out on the water to explore the Tyne.
At the start of the trip, the kayakers will be able to warm up with a glass of mulled cider on dry land, at the Head of Steam on Newcastle Quayside. Before setting foot on the Marina and into the kayaks, professional river guides will deliver an extensive safety briefing and instructions before accompanying and delivering the tours. While on the water, the guides will offer paddling tips and technique to the kayakers as well as delivering a commentary on the sights and sounds of the river and giving an insight into the history of the Tyne and the Newcastle and Gateshead’s Quayside.
The kayakers will paddle beneath the bridges and will see the spectacularly illuminated Sage and Millennium bridge while experiencing the unique atmosphere of the river at night.

Tariq Albassam, Head of Operations at NE1 Ltd said:
“What a way to enjoy Newcastle and its spectacular and iconic Quayside! New night-time neon kayaking is the latest addition to what has been a packed programme for NE1 Ltd, Newcastle’s Quayside and the Newcastle City Marina. 2019 has been the Quayside and the Marina’s busiest to date.
This year the Quayside played host to over 80,000 additional visitors, here to enjoy the Heineken Champions and Challenge cup fan-zone, while on the river other major milestones were reached with the Marina hitting 6,500 boat nights since its launch in 2011. This summer the Marina also played host to a programme of highly successful events including the University Boat race, the city’s inaugural Dragon Boat race and the launch of the new Tyne Kayaking tours with the latest addition of the neon night-time kayaking adventures.
“All of this activity mirrors the wider and long-term ambitions for the Quayside and River Tyne with over £500 million of investment schedule over the next 5 – 10 years. NE1 will continue to step up activity on and off the river and will collaborate with all relevant bodies to ensure the economic and environmental sustainability of what takes place on land and on the river. The neon night-time kayaking adventures are a great new addition and we know they will be extremely popular.”
