This year, NE1 has teamed up with intu Eldon Square to deliver a packed six-week programme of free movies and a whole host of associated activities during the summertime film screenings at Old Eldon Square

During the six weeks of the school summer holidays, NE1 will be running two free films each day starting on Monday 22 July, with intu Eldon Square on board to offer families the chance to sign up to the intu family club with exclusive offers and events throughout the summer. This summer’s movie line up is packed with family favourites and all of the freshest blockbusters straight from the cinema.

Watch out for Throwback Thursdays showing family favourites and cult classics every Thursday throughout the summer. On these days NE1 will also be screening ‘A People’s History of the Bigg Market’ – a documentary commissioned by NE1, made with the help of Northern Stars, in which characters from the area past and present recount their memories of the once thriving Bigg Market.

The first Saturday of the event, 27 July, has been dubbed ‘Sing-a-long Saturday’ and will show a sing-a-long version of The Greatest Showman and the musical classic, Grease. Audience participation will be encouraged and for those not word perfect, the words of both musicals will be on screen throughout the film.

Fresh from its phenomenal box office and awards success, Bohemian Rhapsody will then be shown on Sunday 28 July.

Fans of the ABBA inspired musical, Mamma Mia will need to dust off their flares ready for ‘Mamma Mia Saturday’ on Saturday 3 August when both films will be shown back to back.

Some newly released family blockbusters will grace the big screen at Screen on the Green including the new live-action Dumbo, which will be screened on Saturday 24 August and Mary Poppins Returns on Sunday 1 September.

Newcastle United fans are expected to fill the deckchairs at 6pm on Monday 29 July when ‘Bobby Robson, More than a Manager’ is screened. The documentary has been described as the definitive portrait of Sir Bobby, recognised as one of football’s most inspirational and influential managers.

intu Eldon Square have lined up a number of activations and events surrounding the Screen on the Green movie schedule – some exclusive events will be held for an invited audience of intu family club members while others will be free and open for all the public to enjoy.

When Charlie and the Chocolate factory is screened on Wednesday 14 August, envelopes with prizes supplied by intu Eldon Square will be hidden among the NE1 deck chairs. The surprise winners will be able to claim their special prizes from the intu Eldon Square customer service desk after the film.

There will be other prize give-aways for audiences to enjoy on Fashion Friday, 23 August, when the films Confessions of a Shopaholic and the Devil Wears Prada are screened.

In addition to the films and the associated festivities, every Friday between 11am – 1pm, the intu Eldon Square team will be at Screen on the Green with face painters and giant games for the public to enjoy.

Phil Steele, intu Eldon Square General Manager said:‘“We are delighted to be partnering with NE1’s Screen on The Green this summer. We love to see families and friends spending time together watching movies in the open air on the deck chairs and we have some exciting experiences planned for our intu family club members.”

Ben Whitfield, Head of Marketing and Events said:

“Screen on the Green and the packed movie line up is always a summertime favourite. What’s not to love about watching some of the latest blockbusters, outdoors on the large screen – all for free. Having intu Eldon Square on board with extra events and activities is a major bonus this year and we’re looking forward to the activities they have planned.”
