With an annual retail spend of £1bn per annum and 2.5m residents within the city's catchment area; Newcastle is the primary retail destination in North East England.
Newcastle has benefited from consistently high demand for retail space and increasingly attracts top-end retailers and brands. That said, there is much work still to be done in creating the right environment; commercial and physical, necessary to attract the investors and operators who will secure the city's next stage of development.
In 2015 NE1 (working with Newcastle City Council and FaulknerBrowns Architects) produced a body of work that underlined the potential and opportunity for Northumberland Street and its feeder streets (Blackett Street, Pilgrim Street, Saville Row, Northumberland Road and Ridley Place), recognising the importance of links to Newcastle and Northumbria Universities, the RVI and city beyond.
Following this, NE1 and Newcastle City Council appointed Mark Williams in 2016 as the independent Chair of the Northumberland Street Project Group to progress investment plans for the area. Newcastle City Council have appointed FaulknerBrowns and Cushman & Wakefield.
